National Park is one of the premiere wildlife sanctuaries located in the
Sundarbans delta in Indian state of West Bengal. The park is spread over an
area of 10,000 sq. km of water and land, which is also the world's largest
area of mangrove forests. Our national animal- Royal Bengal Tiger reside
here with full majesty and pride. The park occupies rich flora and fauna
with many attractive recreational options.

Wildlife Species in the Park

Sundarbans
National Park has a wonderful flora. It is the world's largest mangrove
forest possessing around 14 species of mangrove species. It has mangrove
scrub, littoral forest, salt water mixed forest, brackish water mixed forest
and swamp forest. There are around 64 plant species found in the park. And
some plants and trees in the park include genwa, dhundal, passur, garjan,
kankra, sundari and goran.
Sundarbans has around 58 species of mammals in the park. The most prominent
among all mammals in the park is Bengal Royal Tiger, which is the national
animal of India and receives advanced kind of protection. There are more
than 250 tigers who are famously known for their unique characteristic of
swimming in the saline waters, and man-eating tendencies. Other animals in
park can be seen include leopards, rhinoceros, wild buffaloes, wild hogs,
wild cats, barasinga, spotted deer, hog deer, barking deer, and monkeys.
Due to large water bodies and dense forests, the park has attracted a large
variety of migratory and native birds. According to forest department, there
around 248 bird species. The popular birds include open billed storks, white
ibis, water hens, coots, pheasant tailed jacanas, pariah kites, brahminy
kites, marsh harriers, swamp partridges, red jungle fowls, spotted doves,
common mynahs, jungle crows, jungle babblers, cotton teals, herring gulls,
caspian terns, gray herons, brahminy ducks,
Beside animal and birds. it houses a large varieties of aqua fauna like
Gangetic dolphins, saw fish, butter fish, electric rays, silver carp, star
fish, common carp, king crabs. Reptiles such as crocodiles, olive ridley
turtles, sea snakes, estuarine chameleons, king cobras, salvator lizards,
hard shelled batgun terrapins, russels vipers can be seen in the park.
What else to see and do?
- Boat Safari is the best way to enjoy wildlife in Sundarbans. With
the help of your tour operator, you can book a boat or float from local
people or luxury boats offered by the tourism department.
- Bhagatpur Crocodile Project is a crocodile breeding farm located
near the park. You must go there to watch this deadly animal.
- Angling and fishing is one of the fascinating activity in the park.
There are lots of rivers crisscrossing the park. You can also take the
help of boat for fishing.
- Watching tiger is the main purpose of almost every tourists. But it
is so easy as you think. Take jeep safari equipping with all protective
measures.
Travel (Air/Rail/Road) Information
Sundarban can be accessed by reaching to the nearest town Gosaba (50 km).
Dum Dum airport at Kolkata is 112 km away is the nearest airport offering
regular service to all important cities of India. Canning is 48 km away from
the Park is the nearest railhead. Gosaba and Canning are entry points
offering further access only through boats. These entry points are connected
by road with the cities like Kolkata 112 km, Namkhana (105 km), Sonakhali
(100 km), Raidighi (76 km), Canning (64 km), and Najat (92 km).
Wildlife Lodges/Resorts
It is not a problem to find places to stay during the wildlife tour to
Sundarbans. A number of resorts, lodges and forest rest houses are available
near and inside the park. All of them offers excellent accommodation and
cuisine facilities.
