Wildlife Species in Mudumalai
National Park

This
321 sq. km. park has diverse habitats like hills, valleys, ravines,
watercourses and swamps. That is why, you will fine here a diverse rang of
vegetation. The forests types in the park include moist deciduous forests,
dry deciduous forests and scrub forests. The park is home to flora like
bamboos (bambusa arundinacea) natural teak (tectona grandis), anogeissus
latifolia, terminalia, crenulata/ terminalia tomontosa, grewia and blooming
trees like Indian labumusum, aredesia and solanancea.
Mudumalai wildlife sanctuary has a wide variety of wildlife. Some of
animals found in the park include Indian elephants, gaur, banner, macaque,
common langur, tigers, leopards, chital, panthers, sloth bear, python,
barking deer, four horned antelope, otter, crocodiles (mugger), giant flying
squirrel, sambar, hyena, wild dog, wild boar, mouse deer, spotted deer,
jackal, hare, porcupine and mongoose. The reptiles in the park consists of
the crocodiles, pythons, bamboo pit snake, common krait and a variety of
turtles, frogs and amphibians.
The park has rich variety of birds. Peacock- National bird of India, is the
main attraction among the birds. Some other birds which can be seen here are
grey jungle fowl, red spur fowl, grey partridge quails, goggle eyed plower,
malabar whistling thrush, large racket-tailed dronge, the magpie-robin,
spotted babbler, small green barbet, green pigeons, brown dove, malabar grey
hornbill, bulbuls, mynahs, etc. The birds of prey in the park include
eagles, hawks, buzzards, harriers, falcons and king vulture.
What else to see and do?
- Jungle safari is offered by the forest department and it include the
views of exotic varieties of animals like herds of elephant and spotted
dear, the sambar and langoors etc.
- Elephant ride is another way to enjoy the typical zones in the
sanctuary. It takes you to the points where you can not reach by
vehicles.
- Ooty- the Queen of Hill Stations is just 65 km from Mudumalai.
Certainly, you would love to come this one of the most beautiful hill
stations.
Travel (Air/Rail/Road) Information Mudumalai National
Park is located on the Mysore - Ooty Highway, which also passes through the
forests. It has excellent access through road from Bangalore, Mysore and
Ooty. The nearest airport is at Coimbatore, 160-km away from the park and
offers direct flights to Bangalore, Mumbai, Kochi, Chennai and New Delhi.
Calicut (140 km) in Kerala is an international airport. Udhagamandalam
railway station (65 km) and Mysore railway station (95 km) are closest
railheads to the park.
