Wildlife Sanctuary

Dandeli
Wildlife Sanctuary is dominated by the moist deciduous and semi-evergreen
trees with some evergreen trees. Bamboo and teak plantations can been seen
grown in any part of the sanctuary. Owing to its closeness to western ghats,
the sanctuary features breathtaking valleys, regal looking, meandering
rivers, and splendid beauty of the syntheri rock. Some prominent natural
tree species are dalbergia latifolia, terminalia paniculata, tomentosa,
bellerica, logerstroemia isnceolata, xylia xylocarpa, pterocarpus marsupium,
mitragyna parviflora, adina cordifolia, grewia tiliaefolia, cordia
macleodic, kydia clycina and vitex altissima.
You will find here a tremendous diversity of wildlife. Here, you can have
the glimpse of black panther. The other wildlife species in the park include
sloth bear, barking, spotted, sambar, mouse deer, tiger, elephant, panther,
wild dog, civet cat, bison, jackal, langur and giant flying squirrel. The
tigers are present in large numbers but due to high density of the forest,
you need to lots of passion to enjoy the views. You can also see a wide
variety of reptiles, which are crocodiles and various kinds of snakes,
including the king cobra
Owing to undulating rivers, streams and dense forests, Dandeli Wildlife
Sanctuary has become a paradise for migratory as well as natives birds.
Here, you will see a colourful variety of birds all around the park. The
most prominent bird is hornbill which are present in large number in the
park. Some other commonly seen birds in the park include Malabar-pied
hornbill, grey hornbill, great pied hornbill, magpie, robin, golden-backed
woodpecker, crested serpent eagle, partridge, bush grail, darter, egret and
white-breasted kingfisher.
What else to see and do?
- The forest department offers jeep safari and trained guide who make
you see tiger and other exciting animals and birds in the park.
- Take nature walk, bird watching, crocodile sighting trips, fishing,
coracle rides and trekking in the forests. If you love river rafting, it
is also a nice option here.
- The Syntheri rocks is a wonderful sightseeing. It is an awesome
monolithic granite structure located in the middle of a forest.
- the Vincholi rapids, the Supa Dam, Nagajhari Viewpoint, Kulgi Nature
Education Camp, Kavla Caves with their Shivling-like stalagmites, and
Sykes Point are located in the forest and you are recommended to make
trip of it.

Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary is extensively connected with capital city of
Bangalore (481 km) and other cities like Mumbai, Goa, Belgaum, Karwar and
Dharwad, Hubli by road. Nearest railway station is Londa (35km). Belgaum (65
km), Hubli (75 km) and Goa (125 km) are the nearest airports offering
regular flights from all parts of the country.
