Wildlife Sanctuary

The
BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary offers a unique and diverse mosaic of flora. You
find here almost every type of forest vegetation including scrub, riparian,
evergreen, deciduous, sholas and grasslands. It has around 800 species of
plants belonging to various flora species. The Biligiris hills are covered
with tropical dry broad leaf forest. The rhythm of vegetation vary along the
altitude of the park.
The BR Hills Wildlife Sanctuary stands as an important wildlife corridor
between the Western Ghats and the Eastern Ghats and harbors largest
populations of Asian elephants and tigers in southern India. According to
the record of the forest department, there are about 26 species of mammals
in the sanctuary. Major of them are Gaurs, leopards, wild dogs, lesser cats,
sloth bears, squirrels, chitals, sambhars, bears, elephants, panthers and
tigers.
Lush green environment, pleasant climate and wonderful topography of the
park has promoted it one of the best destination of birds in India. It has
254 species of birds which include the enigmatic southern population of the
White-winged Tit (Parus nuchalis). You will see an interesting population of
migratory birds. Some birds which are frequently seen include racket-tailed
drongo and the crested eagle.

activities like angling, amateur fishing, coracle boat rides, bird
watching, river rafting, trekking, outdoor camping etc. Plan them in

- >The temple of Lord Ranganatha in the sanctuary is major
attraction. It houses the deity of Local God 'Biligiriranga'. The annual
car festival of the deity is must to attend occasion.
- > Jeep safari and elephant safari are the most impressive ways to
explore the beauty of the park. Manage both safari with the help of your
tour operator or local guide.
Travel (Air/Rail/Road) Information
Yelandur in the district of Chamarajanagar in south Indian state of
Karnataka is your entry point. It is just 60 km southwest of Mysore and 150
km from capital city of Bangalore. The sanctuary is well connected by rail,
road and air from all major cities of India. Bangalore is the nearest
national and international airport and railway station. You can access rail
and air services to all parts of the country. It is well accessible from
road from all major cities of the state.
